Barry brings over 30 years of experience in hospitals and healthcare management. He has led academic, faith based, for-profit, and non-profit systems giving him a unique insight and perspective. Barry has worked in major metropolitan cities as well as suburban and rural communities. He has run academic medical centers, been the leader for 2 Kaiser Permanente (“KP”) markets with responsibility for over 500,000 lives in each market, and served as a Regional executive over numerous hospitals. He has been involved in complex strategic management, hospital design and construction and has a deep passion for building physician relationships, mentoring future leaders and creating a cohesive team by engaging and collaborating with colleagues and competitors.

A proven track record of exceeding objectives (clinical and financial), and creating a strong culture of excellent employee engagement, physician and community relations. He has worked successfully in partnership with physicians, labor unions and operated in culturally diverse communities. Barry has been involved with resident and fellowship education at academic medical centers and children’s hospitals.

 

STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP / OPERATIONS IMPROVEMENT

  • As CEO & Managing Director for a joint ventured hospital, Barry reinvented The George Washington University Hospital to compete more effectively with MedStar, Johns Hopkins and Inova in the very competitive DC/Maryland/Virginia market. In collaboration with the medical school, practice plan and many of the Department Chairs, obtained ACS Level 1 trauma designation, rebuilt neurology and neurosurgery, began the GW Cancer Institute and initiated both kidney and liver transplant programs.
  • As CEO, engineered a financial turnaround and product line revision with Providence Health & Services at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California.
  • Served as Regional Senior Vice President for Tenet Healthcare and managed/oversaw multiple hospitals across 3 states and had responsibility for financial and operational performance among other leadership qualities.

 

VALUE BASED / MANAGED CARE

  • Served as the CEO for 2 of KP’s largest Southern California markets. Partnering with the Southern California Permanente Medical Group, Barry had responsibility for KPs largest referral hospital, Los Angeles Medical Center and West Los Angeles Medical Center and had responsibility for serving over 500,000 lives.
  • Served as the CEO for Fontana Medical Center and Ontario Vineyard Medical Center which served approximately 500,000 members.
  • In each situation, was involved in planning and constructing of replacement hospitals.

 

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

As a CEO and Regional Senior Vice President, Barry has mentored and developed many CEOs, COOs, CFOs and others who now hold senior positions in organizations such as Dignity Healthcare, USC, Tenet, Bumrungrad International Hospital and others. In his position, Barry has also provided development and continuing education for Boards of Directors and medical staff leaders.

 

FINANCIAL ENGINEERING

  • Led the acquisition and turnaround of Tenet Healthcare’s acquisition of 7 hospitals in Philadelphia after the largest non profit hospital bankruptcy in the US.
  • Assisted with the acquisition of hospitals and secured $800 million of capital in a recent transaction.
  • Assisted with the achievement of philanthropic goals, raising money to build a cancer center and a neuroscience center at Providence Saint Joseph’s.
  • Throughout his career, Barry has consistently exceeded financial goals and been recognized for his excellent work.
